While on a recent trip I was thankful for the engineering put into an often overlooked piece of equipment: the airplane seat. I was sitting behind a large guy on one of our flights. When he returned to his seat mid-flight, he put all of his weight against the back of the seat while putting his seatbelt on. This caused his seat back to extend back a shocking amount. I thought for sure that I was going to end up giving an impromptu dental exam to the dude as he ended up in my lap. When he finished situating the belt around his waist, the seat returned and all was back to normal.
On this July 4th, I can think of no better analogy for the young country that we are celebrating. Much like the humble airline seat standing up to the weight of an American waistline, the colonials who fought the might of England bent but did not break.
Thank you seat engineer for a job well done. You are channeling the spirit of a true patriot.
